CASTLE VIEW HS CHEER TEAM 2014/2015

This Constitution has been written and adopted for the Castle View Cheer Team. The team and its Constitution are governed by Castle View High School, CHSAA, and Douglas County School District.

The purpose of the CVHS Cheer Team:

Create school spirit, pride, and loyalty.  Promote interest in school activities and perform at school games.  Develop responsibility, teach self-respect, encourage honest effort, strive for perfection, and develop character.   Teach teamwork and pride in a quality performance through maintaining high standards.

Advisor/coach

An Advisor/coach is hired by the Athletic Director, Derek Cordes.  The Advisor/coach is responsible for the daily running and activities of the CVHS Cheer team.  The Advisor/coach will be responsible for administering all disciplinary procedures.  Advisor/coach may place certain restrictions on team members.

Eligibility

Each member must maintain eligibility set by CHSAA  (Colorado High School Athletic Association) and CVHS.  Please refer to your athletic handbook provided by CVHS for specifics.

Application/physical

Each member must submit a completed application form (on last pages of this packet), proof of current physical, and Parental Consent/Medical Release Form BEFORE the annual tryouts take place.  Please know that additional school forms may be required t/o the year.  This is subject to change.  PacketS will be made available online one week before tryouts.  Please have physical done as soon as possible.  These forms must be signed by the candidate and by the parent/guardian.

Numbers/teams

A team shall consist of a minimum of 12 and a maximum of 25 team members for varsity, this does include alternates.  Teams will be made according to numbers trying out and coaches.  At this point JV and Varsity are planned.

Attendance

All students who participate in school activities must be in regular full-day attendance the day the activity is scheduled.  Full-day attendance is from the beginning of the first hour and remaining until the close of the last hour of classes.  If a member is ill and misses ANY activity, he/she must be at HOME or seeking medical appointments.  If a member misses ANY practice one week before ANY type of performance, he/she will automatically be replaced by an alternate for that particular performance.

An absence must be documented by the parent in writing with the Attendance Secretary.  All doctor appointments, etc. should be scheduled so they do not interfere with team activities.  All Alternates will attend all practices and performances.  Please see alternate section for further info.

All members must attend each activity in its entirety.  Leaving/arriving early or late because of another sport, an appointment, work, and so on are unacceptable.  Will result in a half demerit for every 30 minutes missed.  Work is not considered an excuse for missing any activity.

Uniform

Our program requires that each team member purchases their own uniform.  Athletic fees cannot begin to cover uniforms.  Each member will be expected to provide practice uniforms and performance uniform.  A complete uniform list will be given to each candidate at tryouts.  Any financial challenges should be discussed with the Advisor/coach.  Each member will be required to maintain good condition and cleanliness of his/her uniform on a weekly basis.  Footwear and accessories such as makeup, bloomers, ribbons, etc. will be purchased by each member.  EACH teams list is different.

Medical

Each member must have a complete physical exam before the first scheduled tryout clinic.

Character

Team members should be leaders within and out of the school and set a good example at all times.  Team members should be above reproach maintaining good personal appearance and habits that cannot be criticized.  Smoking, drinking and/or drug use are grounds for suspension or dismissal by the Advisor/coach.  Each member must abide by those standards set by CVHS, which are found in the Student Handbook.

A member must be courteous and friendly to all other team members as well as the student body.  If it is an on-going issue, this may be grounds for suspension or dismissal by the Advisor/coach.  other teams and visitors ARE NO EXCEPTION.  A member must be respectful to the Advisor/coach and a credit to the school.

Points or demerits will be used as a disciplinary tool.  They will be given by the Advisor/coach.

o   this would also include inappropriate hair

o   Forgotten props or accessories,

o   Inappropriate performance makeup.

·         1 point will be given for:

o   Disrespect toward Advisor or team leaders/captains.  Also applies to team mates.

Suspension will be issued for violation of:

o   Smoking in uniform

o   Lack of minimal grade requirements for more than 2 weeks

o   Upon resuming team activities, the member will become an Alternate for one week and be ineligible to perform. After completion of the “Alternate’s Week” the member can resume regularly scheduled activities.

o   There will be a zero tolerance rule for inappropriate subject matter on social media that is reported to coaching staff.  It will be at the discretion of the coaching staff to the extent of the suspension.  Ex:  Foul language, negative about CVHS /athletes /students /self/staff and so on, pictures or videos of cheers in any way shape or form that are considered negative will also be addressed immediately.

Two suspensions or four points, will result in dismissal from the team

The following violations will result in automatic dismissal:

o   Drinking in uniform

o   Drug use in uniform

o   Any school imposed suspension will be an automatic 2 event suspension or removal from the team

Team Leaders/Captains

The roles and responsibilities of CVHS Team Leaders/Captains are as follows:  Make a practice clothing schedule.  Assign hair styles, make-up, and “what to bring” lists.  Check for game/event time changes the day before every required event.  Keep a copy of music.  Be able to text message communicate with team.  These individuals are required to keep team matters private.  Any gossip regarding team members/team matters may be grounds for dismissal.  Captains/leaders may be asked to check for forms, collection of various items for numerous activities, and help coach/advisor with starting practices.  Coordinate the big sister/brother program for CVHS spirit.  Carpool check list coordinator for all necessary events, such as tumbling at UE.  Report all positive team news to the CVHS newspaper/office/staff.  (Community service, events, competitions, and more.)

Booster Club

When students become members of the team, their parents automatically are expected to attend booster club meetings once a month.  The only booster club at CVHS is a school wide booster club.

However, there will be functioning committees within the CVHS Spirit Organization run by parents. (Individual accounts lead, social lead, ect.)  Every athlete is required to have their parents volunteer and work one event throughout the year.  Otherwise, a charge to the athletes account may occur in order to pay for a worker to replace the parent volunteer.

A sign-up sheet with the year’s events will be available for sign-ups at the first two parent meetings once school begins.  If a parent does not attend meetings, or send someone in their place, please know it is each individual’s responsibility to get the information shared at the meeting.

Camp/s

All VARSITY competitive members are required to attend the summer over-night camp.  Camp for cheer will be in Winter Park WITHIN the week of June 8-15 .  The cost is approx. $ /pp.  Price includes instruction, room and board, and meals.  NEW THIS YEAR *COMPETITION TEAM CHOREOGRAPHY WILL BE DONE AT CAMP.  PRICE INCLUDES CHOREOGRAPHY FEES.  JV will also be within the same week in Winter Park.

***NEW THIS YEAR!!!  INVITATIONS WILL BE GIVEN AFTER SPRING TRYOUTS ON WHAT CAMP IS SUGGESTED.  FINAL TEAM PLACEMENTS, VARSITY, JV, COMPETITIVE VARSITY, COMPETITIVE JV AND SO ON, WILL NOT BE ANNOUNCED UNTIL AFTER THE FALL TRYOUTS.

2014  Transportation will NOT be provided for campers.

There will be a payment schedule supplied by tryouts.  Please know that 80% of the years costs will be required in April, May, and the beginning of June.  No exceptions.  Payment will be made to the companies supplying the uniforms, practice clothing, and camps.  No monies will be refunded if a cheer quits or is removed from a squad.  Individual monies raised would be used w/I the program.  Money can be rolled from year to year for returning members from individual accounts.

JULY is off!  However, each team member is REQUIRED to be in a strength and conditioning program for cheers through the CVHS athletic department. This is required through the athletic department and the CVHS cheer program.  Also, weekly team tumbling is required.  If you are going to miss because of vacations or various other reasons, please submit ahead of time to coaches.   If any varsity team member does not enroll and does not participate in 80% of the tumbling and strength/conditioning, they will not compete in the fall season.  Proof of participation will be checked! Safety for cheers and competitive skills timing are a focus at these camps.  Hence, the stressed importance of conditioning and such for especially varsity levels.

Fund Raising

All members are required to participate in all fund-raising which is generated by the team and/or the Booster Club.  When a fundraiser is required, payment for amount that organization will receive may be paid instead of doing the sale of items.  However, the sale of items or payment is required.  These fundraisers help off-set the costs of music, competitions, signs, coaches camp fees, coaches conference, and more.  Major fundraising is done during the summer and fall.

Community Service

The CVHS Spirit Team goal is to do one community service each month.  This is absolutely required by each team member.   1 demerit/point will be given for non-participation.  Monetary complications will never be an excuse, because asking a coach/advisor for options will ALWAYS be made available.  We support the Susan Kommen Breast Cancer Walk, the CR Women and Family Crisis Center, local elementary schools, US military, and many more.

Competition team members….

If placed on a team, it does not guarantee that the athlete will compete.  Varsity competition team will have 4 alternates.  (A full stunt group.)  Please understand that when varsity makes finals at state, they will automatically plan on going to nationals.  It is the goal of our program.  A national’s team will be announced the week after state.  Competing at state does not guarantee anyone a nationals spot.

Gentlemen

Boys are an important part of our program.  Unlike most sports, boys and girls work together in spirit teams.   In co-ed cheer, boys have a very specific role:  They are expected to be Yell Leaders.  At games, the boys will be the leaders of cheers, of flags, megaphones, and setting up game/event formations.  Boys will not be bench warmers.  This is a college style program for boys.  Confidence and being a team member/player will be required.  The girls have these expectations as well, however, they will not be the sole leaders cheering at games.  Boys who tryout do not automatically make it onto varsity.

Tryouts

Tryout attire:  Clothing should be neat and clean.  Candidates dress in similar attire as to not call attention to any of the returning candidates.  Cheers please wear plain white shirts and shorts in either red, black, or gold.  Athletic shoes are required.  No jewelry should be worn.  Hair should be secured up and back (away from the face).  Heavy make-up is not appropriate.  Nails should be short and light (if any) polish.  A number system is used to identify candidates at tryouts, make sure your number can be seen on your attire at all times.

Spring:  A tripod and camcorder to tape tryouts will be used again this year.  Candidates come out in groups of 2-4 to perform their group material.  There may be call-backs.  On final tryouts day, participants should bring snacks and something to do.  (Homework, a book, a pillow…)Tryout requirements and squad regulations will be reviewed at the clinic and tryouts.  A photo must be attached to each application. It can be a paper copy.  Just need to put a face to the name!

Release forms and consent forms must be turned in before anyone can participate.  Made available at: castleviewspiritteam.blogspot.com, one week before tryouts.

Spring:  Parent meeting April 8th at 7pm in the CVHS commons.  Copies of the tryout material will be made available for $10 on April 15th.  (They can share instead of buying their own.)  If attending the tryout clinics before tryouts, it will be included in the clinic cost.  PRE-tryout clinics April 15 and 16 6-8pm.  $15/day OR $25 for both days paid at once.  Checks written to CVHS or cash only.  APRIL 17, 18, and 19 are the actual tryout days.  Judging of stunting and attitude are evaluated on April 17 and 18th.  April 19th is when dance, cheer, fight song, jumps, and tumbling are evaluated.  On April 17th, each candidate must complete a one mile run.  Please bring running shoes for this specific skill.

***If unable to attend clinic days and/or tryouts, a video/dvd can be submitted.  Please email Coach Heather or Coach Elijuan for required material to be on video/dvd. hacampora@gmail.com or elijuanp@yahoo.com

If any dates need to be missed because of a spring sport, please let Coach Heather know with a note included in your tryout packet.  She is happy to work with various special situations if told ahead of time!

Post-tryouts and posting results will be handed out on April 23rd.  Results will be posted by letter and handed out.  Meetings to discuss only an individual’s results may be set at this time.

There is always the possibility that an athlete will not be placed on a team.  If team sizes are too large, we will make cuts.
After spring tryouts, your athlete will be told if they have made a spot on the CVHS cheer team.  They will also then be given an invitation to either the jv or varsity camp.  No final placement for varsity or jv will be done until after fall tryouts.  No “bubbles” this year.  This will give coaching staff an opportunity to establish the safest and best combination of athletes to make the best TEAMS possible.

If an athlete is not working well with others, not being positive, does not have required paperwork in, they too will not be placed on a team.  Past placement does not guarantee the same level of placement for the following year.  The competition level and expectations rise every year.  Those who are returning spirit team members need to keep in mind their past accountability and will be taken into consideration.   With all of this said, we have great kids in these programs, and we are looking forward to another great season.  This is a challenging, rewarding, and fun program.  We look forward to meeting new faces and seeing the returning!  Best of luck!

Coach Heather  and Coach Elijuan

Dear Parents,

Your student/athlete has expressed an interest in trying out to become a member of the Castle View Cheerleading Squad for the 2014/2015 school year.

If he/she is elected to be a cheerleader, there are specific responsibilities and obligations which your son/daughter must assume in order to qualify and remain an active member of the team.

After reading the attached constitution and fully understanding the rules and regulations which govern this program, and after your child has a complete understanding of his/her responsibilities, please sign and have your child sign, as well as return the release form that can be found on the team blog one week before tryouts, to the coach/advisor at tryout clinics or with the tryout dvd/video by their first day of practice.  (No one will be officially placed on a team until this is turned in.  New students to CVHS must submit proof of current physical to the CVHS athletic office BEFORE tryout clinics.  NO ONE will be allowed to participate in clinics without the CVHS athletics office clearance.  Do not bring the proof of current physical to the clinics for clearance.  Coaches/staff can not approve any athlete.

The approximate cost for each student is: varsity $2700/ jv $1500, which includes uniforms, summer camp, camp wear, travel expenses, and supplies. Any team member owing money for prior season/s will not be permitted to tryout/practice until balance is paid.

Being a member of the CVHS Cheerleading Squad has many rewards and is a valuable experience they will remember for a lifetime. Additionally, your son/daughter will give pride and spirit to our school, students, and community through their participation! We are delighted to offer your son/daughter the opportunity to join one of the finest organizations at our school/district/state/nation and we look forward to a successful and great year! If you have any questions concerning the constitution or cheerleader roles and responsibilities, please email either coach Heather or Elijuan.

Thank you and best of luck!
