Ø  Each member must abide by those standards set by CVHS, which are found in the Student Handbook.

v  Team Leaders/Captains

Ø  The roles and responsibilities of CVHS Team Leaders/Captains are as follows:

§  Make a practice clothing schedule.

§  Assign hair styles, make-up, and “what to bring” lists.

§  Check for game/event time changes the day before every required event.

§  Keep a copy of music.

§  Be able to text message communicate with team.

§  These individuals are required to keep team matters private.  Any gossip regarding team members/team matters may be grounds for dismissal.

§  Captains/leaders may be asked to check for forms, collection of various items for numerous activities, and help coach/advisor with starting practices.

§  Coordinate the big sister/brother program for CVHS spirit.

§  Car-pool check list coordinator.

§  Report all positive team news to the CVHS newspaper/office/staff.  (Community service, events, competitions, and more.)

v  Booster Club

Ø  When students become members of the team, their parents automatically are expected to attend booster club meetings once a month.

§  The Booster Club will be governed by officers as denoted in the organization by-laws.  The only booster club at CVHS is a school wide booster club.

Ø  However, there will be functioning committees within the CVHS Spirit Organization run by parents. (Individual accounts lead, social lead, ect.)  Every athlete is required to have their parents volunteer and work one event throughout the year.  Otherwise, a charge to the athletes account may occur in order to pay for a worker to replace the parent volunteer.

Ø  A sign-up sheet with the year’s events will be available for sign-ups at the first two parent meetings.

v  Camp/s

Ø  All members are required to attend the summer over-night camp.  Camp for cheer and dance will be at CSU June 21-24.  The cost is approx. $380/pp.

Ø  Transportation will NOT be provided for campers.

Ø  Costs may include instruction, room and board, and meals.

Ø  JULY is off!  However, each team member is expected to be in a strength and conditioning program for cheers through the CVHS athletic department & a dance technique class for dancers.  If any varsity team member does not enroll and does not participate in 80% of the class, they will not compete in the fall season.  Proof of participation will be checked! Safety for cheers and competitive skills timing are a focus at these camps.  Hence, the stressed importance for especially varsity levels.

v  Fund Raising

Ø  All members are required to participate in all fund-raising which is generated by the team and/or the Booster Club.  When a fundraiser is required, payment for amount that organization will receive may be paid instead of doing the sale of items.  However, the sale of items or payment is required.  There will be opportunities during the fundraisers for individuals to sell more than the required to earn money for their own accounts.

Ø  There will be set goals for each member to attain in their fund raising activities.

Ø  These fundraisers help off-set the costs of music, competitions, signs, coaches camp fees, coaches conference, and more.  Major fundraising is done during the summer and fall.

Ø  New this year:  we will reduce the amount of team fundraising.

v  Community Service

Ø  The CVHS Spirit Team goal is to do one community service each month.

Ø  This is absolutely required by each team member.

Ø  1 demerit/point will be given for non-participation.  Monetary complications will never be an excuse, because asking a coach/advisor for options will ALWAYS be made available.

Ø  We support the Susan Kommen Breast Cancer Walk, the CR Women and Family Crisis Center, local elementary schools, US military, and many more.

v  Gentlemen

Ø  Boys are a part of our program.  Unlike most sports, boys and girls work together in spirit teams.

Ø  In co-ed cheer, boys have a very specific role:  They are expected to be Yell Leaders.  At games, the boys will be the leaders of cheers, of flags, megaphones, and setting up game/event formations.  Boys will not be bench warmers.  This is a college style program for boys.  Confidence and being a team member/player will be required.  The girls have these expectations as well, however, they will not be the sole leaders cheering at games.

Ø  In dance, boys are expected to dance masculine styles of the same material given to the girls.

v  Tryouts

Ø  Tryout attire

§  Clothing should be neat and clean.

§  Candidates dress in similar attire as to not call attention to any of the returning candidates.  Cheers please wear plain white shirts and shorts in either red, black, or gold.  Athletic shoes are required.

§  No jewelry should be worn.

§  Hair should be secured up and back (away from the face).

§  Heavy make-up is not appropriate.

§  Nails should be short and light (if any) polish.

Ø  A number system is used to identify candidates at tryouts, make sure your number can be seen on your attire at all times.

Ø  Spring:  A tripod and camcorder to tape tryouts will be used again this year.

Ø  Spring:  Candidates come out in groups of 2-4 to perform their group material.

Ø  There may be call-backs.  On final tryouts day, participants should bring snacks and something to do.  (Homework, a book, a pillow…)

Ø  Spring:  Tryout requirements and squad regulations will be reviewed at the clinic and tryouts.

Ø  Release forms and consent forms must be turned in before anyone can participate.

Ø  Males: tryouts should be about masculinity, strength, motion technique, tumbling, turns (dance only), and jump technique.

Ø  There will be a warm-up at each clinic

Ø  Spring:  Copies of the tryout material will be made available for $10 on the first day of tryouts.  (They can share instead of buying their own.)  If attending the tryout clinics before tryouts, it will be included in the clinic cost.

Ø  If unable to attend clinic days and/or tryouts, a video/dvd can be submitted.  Please email coach Heather for required material to be on video/dvd.

Ø A snapshot must be attached to each application. It can be a paper copy.  Just need to put a face to the name!

v  Post-tryouts and posting results

Ø  Spring: Results will be posted by letter and handed out.

Ø  Meetings to discuss only an individual’s results may be set at this time.

There is always the possibility that an athlete will not be placed on a team.  If team sizes are too large, we will make cuts.  If an athlete is not working well with others, not being positive, does not have required paperwork in, they too will not be placed on a team.  Past placement does not guarantee the same level of placement for the following year.  The competition level and expectations rise every year.  Those who are returning spirit team members need to keep in mind their past accountability will be taken into consideration.   With all of this said, we have great kids in these programs, and as a spirit team coach I am looking for those to build up our newer schools traditions.  This is a challenging, rewarding, and fun program.  I look forward to meeting new faces and seeing the returning!  Best of luck!

Personal responsibility and maturity is an important quality for a cheerleader and dance from CVHS to possess.  Failure to meet any of the requirements by the dates listed above, may affect the candidates eligibility to participate in the tryout process.  There has traditionally been a fall tryout.  It is designed to be for those who did not tryout in the spring and/or are new to CVHS.  The likelihood that anyone will be placed on a varsity level is slim.  The goal is to set the teams in the spring.  Team bonding and team growth is a safety concern for cheers and a necessary element for dancers timing of various skills.

The role of the alternate:

·        An alternate will be able to help the team by filling in as a spot.

·        If another team member is unable to participate, an alternate may be asked to fill in.

·        Alternates will participate in games, perform at assemblies and special events, able to letter, may have opportunity to compete (depends on number restrictions of some competitions)

·        Benefits to alternate can also be that the athlete is learning at a higher level, will learn various routine positions, and will be able to continue to improve on individual skills.

Coaches will place athletes on the team (s) that they feel are best for the athlete, team, and program as a whole.  A team member can be moved up or down based on skills, attendance, and conduct.  Inabililty to keep to payment schedule and/or inabaility to turn in various required paperwork may also be grounds for moving a member down or off of a squad.  Coaches will very likely require additional practices for athletes that need the extra time/help.

Please look upon this page for future additional rules and regs.  If newly hired coaches wish to add anything, it will be on this page, and a required signature will be placed on this page for the athlete and parent/s.
